Exhibition of Donovan’s Sapphographs in Athens

  • Donovan: Sapphographs, a series of extraordinary photographic works on paper by the singer/songwriter Donovan, will be mounted in the handsome galleries of the Hellenic American Union for the month of June, 2010, during Athens Music Festival. The 16 pieces in the show, although monumental in size, cast an intimate, lyrical spell that captures both the delicate elegance of Sappho’s poetry and the gentle intimacy of Donovan’s music. Thus, Donovan: Sapphographs casts a line from artist to artist that stretches across almost two thousand years.

Donovan: Sapphographs will be the centerpiece of a variety of cultural events. In brief, three internationally recognized experts on Sappho will deliver lectures to open the show. The acclaimed poet Olga Broumas will read from her works related to the ancient poet. Two performance pieces, one theatrical and one dance, have been commissioned for presentation during the opening. Two academic authorities on ancient Greek music will give lectures to introduce performances on replica instruments by the American Ensemble de Organographia and Professor Stelios Psaroudakis of the University of Athens. Donovan will attend the opening to speak about the Sapphographs and sing some of his classic songs, as well as a new piece, Be Mine, directly inspired by Sappho.

Donovan: Sapphographs has already been exhibited in the United States and Ireland to an enthusiastic response from critics and public alike. Now we plan to bring the Sapphographs home, in a sense, to Greece. We need your help to accomplish this worthwhile endeavor, which, through the collaboration of CHS, HAU, and Govinda, now encompasses a multidimensional tribute to Sappho, a true SapphoFest.
