THE DONOVAN ARCHIVE presents Slow Down World

  • The seventh release of THE SEVENTIES COLLECTION as Digital Download on iTunes.

“Another USA studio, A&M on La Brea in Los Angeles, which was the Charles Chaplin Film Studios he built custom for himself. I produced this album with more than an engineer, Pete Romano. The amazing Jim Keltner on drums. I gave David Foster his first arranger job on my Pre-Raphaelite masterpiece “Dark-Eyed Blue Jean Angel“.

David just arrived from Canada and formed a band with Keltner for George Harrisons little label Dark Horse Records, he had an office in A&M Records Studio lot. Slow Down World, major problem ahead. This was 1976 and I was early singing the Eco-Songs always pointing out the disaster in store for the world if it kept on poisoning the garden of Mother Nature. And now these songs, 20 years later, the governments of the world catch up to we poets of the Sixties warnings. Download the album and play loud it to your local politician!“ (Donovan)

The digital release of the original 1976 album „Slow Down World“ will be October 8, 2010.

So true, Donovan. I remember when it came out it in the 70s, it was so unusual. Loved it too.

This poem was written to Maya's Dance, which itself has beautiful lyrics to go along with a beautiful melody.

But the spirit moved me so I gave the melody my own interpretation.

I mean to give no offense by doing so and hope others enjoy this poem.

There is something that I want to tell you
But I’m not sure if you want me to say
I’ve thought about it for a long long time ‘tis true
And now it just can’t wait another day

Understand I’m usually not this shy
But when you’re near I cannot comprehend
Why I feel that every time we say goodbye
My heart will break and my spirit will bend

    All I mean to say
Is I love you more with every day
    If we could be friends
Maybe you would love me once again

Don’t go thinking that I do not need us
I know my message isn’t always clear
We can be nothing to each other without trust
With trust we nothing ever need to fear

    All I mean to say
Is I love you more with every day
    If we could be friends
Maybe you would love me once again

So if you worry in your mind about me
If in yourself you can’t see us as one
Try to find an answer that can let you be
Willing to start again what we'd begun

    All I mean to say
Is I love you more with every day
    If we could be friends
Maybe you would love me once again

Time has passed and taken with it my hope
We both moved on and grew so far apart
But in my dreams I sometimes still can never cope
Some part of you yet lives within my heart

    All I mean to say
Is I love you more with every day
    If we could be friends
Maybe you would love me once again

    All I mean to say
Is I love you more with every day
    If we could be friends
Maybe you would love me once again

    All I mean to say
Is I love you more with every day
    If we could be friends
Maybe you would love me once again

This takes me back. I discovered Donovan at the same time as the Sex Pistols (getting me some strange looks from behind the counter at my local record shop as I bought their LP and Sunshine Superman at the same time!) It reminds me that Donovan’s sales problems weren’t in the music – it was the album covers (remember, James Taylor was selling records at this time. In comparison to him Donovan sounded like the Who).  The next one (Donovan – with Local Boy Chops Wood on it) was a pretty good album – but the cover?!?! Ye Gods! It appeared to be specifically designed to be loathed by every record buyer and music critic in the world in 1977. Check it out and put your head back into that era. You’ll SEE the problem immediately…
