Donovan’s Nashville Return

Donovan, a new member of The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2012, has made a new album in Nashville Shadows of Blue.

Media Enquiries: support@donovan.ie

It is an historic return to Nashville as Donovan’s North American recording career began in Nashville in 1965 when his first single ‘Catch the Wind’ was released on Hickory Records and reached Number Three on the Pop Charts.

The song was instantly covered by Country Music Stars Dottie West, Buck Owens, Flatt&Scruggs, Chet Atkins and Glen Campbell. The Scottish folk singer was accepted by the Country Music World. He was 18 years old.

Donovan says, “I never forgot Nashville and I knew I would go back to Nashville one day with a set of songs I have kept in my back jeans pocket”.

Donovan was discovered in 1964 in London and signed to Peer Music, the famous Independent Music Publisher, created by Ralph Peer, the maverick who recorded The Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers in 1928. It is widely accepted Ralph Peer began what became the Country Music Industry.

In 1923, Okeh Records talent scout Ralph Peer held the first recording sessions for Appalachian regional musicians in Atlanta, Georgia. Musicians recorded at these sessions included Fiddlin’ John Carson, a champion fiddle player from North Georgia.

The commercial success of the Atlanta sessions prompted Okeh to seek out other musicians from the region, including Henry Whitter, who was recorded in New York in 1924. The following year, Peer recorded a North Carolina string band fronted by Al Hopkins that called themselves “a bunch of hillbillies.” Peer applied the name to the band, and the success of the band’s recordings led to the term “Hillbilly music” being applied to Appalachian string band music.

In 1927, Peer, then working for the Victor Talking Machine Company, held a series of recording sessions at Bristol, Tennessee that to many music historians mark the beginning of commercial country music. Musicians recorded at Bristol included the Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers.

Other record companies, such as Columbia Records and ARC, followed Peer’s lead and held similar recording sessions. Many early Appalachian musicians, including Clarence Ashley and Dock Boggs, experienced a moderate level of success. The onset of the Great Depression in the early 1930s, however, reduced demand for recorded music, and most of these musicians fell back into obscurity.

Donovan has been with Peer Music ever since. and it was to Peer Music Nashville that Donovan came to make his new Nashville Return.

On his return to Nashville in 2012 Kevin Lamb of Peer Music introduced Donovan to Michael Knox, a Multi-Grammy Award Winning Producer, who is now part of the Peer Music Family. Michael suggested Donovan record with his hit team of session players in Treasure Isle Studios, Nashville.

Donovan started recording September 2012 in Treasure Isle and ‘waxed’ a set of 14 songs. The prolific song maker says he kept a special set of Broken Hearted ballads and Outlaw songs for his Nashville Return.

Two more sessions in January and February of 2013 completed the album. Donovan invited his friend and famed singer songwriter John Sebastian to play harmonica on ‘The Harmonica Girl ‘ track. Donovan also invited Greta Gaines, a local Nashville recording artist to do a guest vocal on this track too.

Donovan says of his musical roots.

“As a kid in 1940′s Scotland I listened to my Irish-Scots family sing folk songs, though I didn’t know they were folk-songs then. Songs of oppression and rebellion, prison ships and forced migration, laments of lost love. My father would recite the poems of Robert Service, tales of The Yukon and the adventurers who went over to America in the 1800′s, taking the Irish-Scots music with them.

Many settled in the rural south and helped create Country Music. As a teen I listened to Hank Williams, Buddy Holly and The Everly Brothers and I knew I wanted to sing and make records. I hitch-hiked away from home at 16 with my pal Gypsy Dave and a borrowed arch-top Zenith guitar. I slept on the beaches of Cornwall and seriously learned Mother Maybele’s finger – style guitar picking which became such an important part of my recordings.

It was my great good fortune to be discovered in London at 18 and recorded by Ralph Peer Jr who’s father Ralph Peer had recorded The Carter Family and Jimmy Rodgers in 1928.”

And so in 1964, down in the London Tin Pan Alley basement studio of Southern Music (now Peer Music) Donovan recorded his first tracks and was nurtured by Peer Music as a songwriter. Now Donovan and Peer Music are together again for Donovan’s Nashville Return.

Donovan has had 13 Top Forty Hits, over 300 covers of his songs in many diverse genres, written over 500 songs, he is a new member of The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, a BMI Icon and taught Mother Maybelle’s Guitar Picking to John Lennon, Paul Mc Cartney & George Harrison of The Beatles, which created the distinct roots style on The Beatles White Album and especially their songs Dear Prudence, Blackbird and While My Guitar Gently Weeps.

George Harrison commented on The Beatles Anthology DVD, “Donovan is all over The White Album”.

Yet Donovan counts as his greatest achievement, meeting and marrying his muse Linda Lawrence. The love songs on his new Nashville Album are proof of that. New single ‘To Love You’ is free streaming from the Shadows of Blue album on SoundCloud.

You can listen to the first new single To Love You here.

You can listen to the second new single The Harmonica Girl.

The album Shadows of Blue was released on May the 31s.

LYRICS

BLUE JEAN ANGEL

I pulled into the roadhouse as the sun was going down
The music sounded good to me for a one pump one horse town
I put away a few cans I’ve been traveling for days
Then I saw her in the pool room through the smoky haze

She was a dark eyed blue jean angel I loved the way she danced
She had a roving eye so I thought I’d take a chance
So I walked right up to her and I asked her to dance

Some jerk kicked the juke box out the bar room music died
I was the intruding stranger get out, it meant, and ride
So I tapped my feet in a rhythm to a kind of a country beat
Then I took her in my bear hug and we waltzed into the street

With the dark eyed blue jean angel I love the way you dance
You got a roving eye so I thought I’d take a chance
So I got you in my bear hug are we headed for romance

Solo

The bar room door burst open the cowboys hot to kill
I said honey I got the wheels if you got the will
She gave me a look that said that she’d been waiting on this day
I said jump onto my bike babe and I’ll zoom you away

With the dark eyed blue jean angel I loved the way she danced
Got a roving eye so I thought I’d take a chance
Dark eyed blue jean angel I love the way you dance
Dark eyed blue jean angel are we headed for romance

RESURRECT YOUR LOVE

I woke up early in the morning
I dreamed that you were by my side
And then I felt the same old longing
And the tears I gotta hide
Its crazy how I felt you by me
Your tender body close to mine
And now I know I gotta cry me
A river by that lonesome pine

How can good love turn to bad
And such a heart to feel so sad
Oh my darlin’ hear my plea
Resurrect your love for me

I hear a lonesome whistle blowin’
Soon I’ll be rollin’ down the line
Back to the future I am going
Tryin’ to leave the past behind
I got that crazy kind of feelin’
I wanna do myself some harms
Back to the old times I am stealin’
When I lay there in your arms

How can good love turn to bad
And such a heart to feel so sad
Dear lord Jesus hear my plea
Resurrect her love for me
Oh my darlin hear my plea
Resurrect her love for me
Oh my darlin hear my plea
Resurrect her love for me

I dreamed that you were by my side
Then I felt the same old longing
All the tears I gotta hide

Its crazy how I felt you by me
Your tender body close to mine
And now I know I gotta cry me
A river by that lonesome pine

How can good love turn to bad
And such a heart to be so sad
Oh my darlin’ hear my plea
Resurrect your love for me
Oh my darlin’ hear my plea
Resurrect your love for me
Oh my darlin’ hear my plea
Won’t you come back soon to me

TO LOVE YOU

I love you I miss you
To hold you to kiss you
I want you I need you
To be for me so true

And Why do I sigh for you
Could it be I love you
And all I have to do
Is to love you

I dream you are with me
When you are far from me
For here in my heart you
Are always part of me

And why do I sigh for you
Could it be I love you
And all I have to do
Is to love you

Sometimes a man and a woman in love
Ask of each other impossible love

Solo

And Why do I sigh for you
Could it be I love you
And all I have to do
Is to love you
Love you Love you
Love You Love You
Love You Love You

RIVER OF RUIN

The cards are stacked against me
My stars are at war
Wherever I turn dear
I find a locked door
My hands are securely bound
Its all a stale mate
But I don’t worry none
I Just sit and wait

For it never gets dark any more since I’m with you
There may be a storm outside my door but that’s nothin’ new
I’ll weather the storm sweetheart with you by my side
And we’ll cross the river of ruin be it ever so wide

Things are lookin’ black dear
The future looks dim
I jumped in the deep end
To find I can’t swim
They poured in the concrete
The quick drying kind
It looks like the end dear
But I really don’t mind

For it never gets dark any more since I’m with you
There may be a storm outside my door but that’s nothin’ new
We’ll weather the storm sweetheart with you by my side
And we’ll cross the river of ruin be it ever so wide

Solo

For it never gets dark any more since I’m with you
There may be a storm outside my door but that’s nothin’ new
We’ll weather the storm sweetheart with you by my side
And we’ll cross the river of ruin be it ever so wide

And we’ll cross the river of ruin be it ever so wide

SHADOWS OF BLUE

The careless goodbye that you gave me
The last of the love that we shared
The hopeless recalling of memory
The first time when once you cared

I wonder if you’re thinking of me
Here in the pale moonlight
I’m thinking of you and I’ll always
Be wanting you holding me tight

You loved me but did you ever
I live in the visions of you
I hear only phrases you once said to me
Your eyes deep in shadows of blue
Your eyes deep in shadows of blue

Solo

You loved me but did you ever
I live in the visions of you
I hear only phrases you once said to me
Your eyes deep in shadows of blue
Your eyes deep in shadows of blue

ROCK & ROLL GYPSY

I’ve been the wanderer since I left my home
The fool in jeans the highway to roam
Guitar on my back and a head full of dreams
A pocket full of songs and naïve schemes

The sun’s going down on another town
As I ramble my way around
The sun’s going down on another town
I’ll sing my song for you

So roll up, roll up, roll up now
Rock and roll gypsies are in your town
Charm your feet right off of the ground
So lay your silver down

You know the wanderer he’s a stranger in town
His neon come on when the sun goes do
And the streets get graveyard in the dead of night
As he lie awake and the town sleeps tight

The sun’s going down on another town
I ramble my way around
The sun’s going down on another town
I’ll sing my song for you

So roll up, roll up, roll up now
Rock and roll gypsies are in your town
We’ll Charm your feet right off of the ground
So lay your silver down

Solo

The sun’s going down on another town
I’ll sing my song for you

So roll up, roll up, roll up now
Rock and roll gypsies are in your town
We’ll Charm your feet right off of the ground
So lay your silver down

I’ll sing my song for you

THE LOVING OF YOU

I can tell by the way you swivel and sway
To the tune of my new moon melody
How I need the loving of you

Your presence by the way gives light to my day
I’d be part of the heart sick lonely ones
Had I not the loving of you

The night is so cold when you’re not here to hold
I find it so hard to sleep on my own
I feel like a stranger my life’s not my own
I won’t feel myself again ‘til you come home

Solo

When you’re away I search through my day
Like a man in the land of emptiness
I’m missing the loving of you
How I need the loving of you
Oh I need the loving of you

THE BLAME GAME

Always finding fault in others all over the town
Never ever seeing what is going down
Thinking their entitled to what they didn’t earn
Owning up is a lesson they don’t wanna learn

They’re playing the blame game
Always the same game
Aint it a shame shame
Playing the blame game

They don’t like me they all hate me that’s the way they feel
Gimme something is the one thing they all think is real
You made me so unhappy you must suffer now
Everyone they know can see it but they don’t know how

They’re playing the blame game
Always the same game
Aint it a shame shame
Playing the blame game

Solo

Up above the moon she bright in the darkest night
Down below their eyes are blind they cant see the light

They’re playing the blame game
Always the same game
Aint it a shame shame
Playing the blame game

When a bad thing happens to them they figure why
Its another woman did it or another guy
Never me its always them they did this to me
We all wonder if the truth they will ever see

Playing the blame game
Always the same game
Aint it a shame shame
Playing the blame game

THE HARMONICA GIRL

Met a girl in Santa Monica
She played the harmonica
I dream her into my life
maybe make her my wife

I thought about her all night long
And when the DJ played that song
On KCRW it made me feel so blue

Next day I went to find her
Have you seen the girl with red hair
No we ain’t seen her anywhere
Then I saw her by Casa Del Mar

I thought about her all night long
And when the DJ played that song
On KCRW it made me feel so blue

I followed her onto the beach
I thought she was out of reach
She turned and she did say
I hoped you’d be back today

I thought about you all night long
When the DJ played that song
On KCRW it made me think of you
I thought about you all night long
When the DJ played that song
On KCRW
it made me think of you

Solo

I thought about you all night long
And when the DJ played that song
On KCRW it made me think of you

Got hitched in Santa Monica
she played the harmonica
Two kids one with red hair
and the other like me is fair

On the beach all summer long
When the DJ plays our song
On KCRW
Oh the sky is blue
I thought about you all night long
And when the DJ played that song
On KCRW, it made me think of you
